Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Township of Perth East (the “Township”) Roads Supervisor and Manager of Public Works, the Operator/Labourer is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Township’s road related infrastructure ensuring the high standard established is maintained.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Perform road surface maintenance activities including calcium application, hauling, spreading and grading of granular materials throughout the gravel road network. Machine and hand patching with various materials throughout the hard surface road network.
  • Perform roadside maintenance such as mowing grass, shoulder gravel retrieval, trimming and removal of brush and trees, litter pickup, ditching, cleaning of storm sewers, catch basins and culverts.
  • Carry out winter control operations on Township roadways, sidewalks and parking lots such as plowing to remove snow and ice, sanding and salting, ice blading, loading sand/salt/snow and maintaining catch basins, culverts and roadsides for drainage.
  • Operate tandem and/or tri-axle dump trucks, road graders, excavators, bulldozers, compactors, tractors, loaders, mowers, sidewalk machines, snow blowers, woodchippers, asphalt and shoulder spreaders, pickup trucks, chainsaws and other miscellaneous power tools and equipment attachments as required.
  • Services and maintains fleet including oil changes, lubrication, minor repairs, filter replacements, replacing shoes and blades, cleaning and painting. Performs mechanical repairs where appropriate including replacement of hoses, lights, wiring, starters, alternators and tires.
  • Conducts metal fabricating and welding on machinery, including replacing plough blades and other attachments, to trucks and graders.
  • Completes bridge and guiderail repairs, culvert replacements, storm sewer infrastructure repairs and replacements, roadside sign repairs and replacements, concrete curb and sidewalk repairs or replacements.
  • Responds to emergency situations including flooding, infrastructure failures and hazardous road conditions.
  • Assist in the maintenance of select Township grounds including cemeteries and parks completing grass cutting, hedge and tree trimming, landscaping and basic building maintenance.
  • Assists in the maintenance and operation of the Township landfill site where required, including waste pickup, transfer and compaction.
  • Engage with the public professionally and courteously, addressing concerns and provided assistance as needed.
  • Follow all Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations and Township Policies to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent education required.  
  • Minimum of one (1) year previous work experience, preferably working with large equipment. 
  • Valid Class DZ license is required. Class AZ license and/or Class A Restricted (AR) license is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to obtain additional certifications as required (e.g. chainsaw operation, first aid, traffic control).
  • Mechanical and technical ability to operate vehicles, machinery, equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner.  
  • Strong mechanical knowledge and ability to perform basic equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in problem-solving.
  • Strong teamwork, communication and organizational skills.
  • Physically fit and able to perform labor-intensive tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and respond to emergencies is required.
Working Conditions:
  • Work includes lifting heavy objects, standing for extended periods, operating machinery for long hours and working in variable weather conditions.
  • Possible exposure to severe storm and winter conditions involving white outs, slippery conditions and fallen tree limbs. 
  • Works with interruption and is expected to meet deadlines. Exposure to disagreeable people and situations, including unpredictable traffic and road rage, can be expected.   
  • Exposure to loud noises, dust, extreme temperatures, and potential hazards associated with heavy equipment operation and public works maintenance.
  • Overtime may be required during peak periods and in emergency situations.
Position Details:
  • Working hours are 44 hours per week.
  • Overtime may be required during peak periods and in emergency situations.
  • 2026 Hourly Pay Range - Grade 7: $27.78 - $34.72 per hour.
