PUBLIC WORKS SUMMER STUDENT

The Township of Perth East is recruiting for one (1) Summer Student within our Public Works team.

Under the supervision of the Manager of Public Works, the Summer Student is responsible for a variety of functions within the Public Works team operating a wide range of small equipment related to the general maintenance of municipal property, facilities and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operation and maintenance of municipal equipment including but not limited to: light trucks, zero-turn lawn mowers, trimmers and hand tools;
  • Responsible for clearing brush and removing rubbish from Township property, including parks, roadways, ditches and boulevards;
  • Cuts the grass/lawns and trims township property including parks, cemeteries, guardrails and other areas as assigned;
  • Assists in the maintenance of roads, sidewalks, streets and boulevards;
  • General maintenance and cleaning of township facilities;
  • Loading/unloading and moving of supplies and equipment;
  • Assists Equipment Operators, Utility Operators and Parks Personnel as required;
  • Practice effective risk management, health and safety practices and procedures, observing and reporting work site hazards;
  • Updates asset inventory (Streetlights, Fire Hydrants, Signs, etc.);
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Must be attending a recognized secondary or post secondary educational institute or equivalent, returning at the start of the next school year or semester;
  • Valid G Driver’s License;
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently;
  • Working knowledge of large equipment such as a tractor, lawnmower and weed whacker is desirable.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties assigned, including heavy manual labor for extended periods at various heights in all types of weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to receive and follow detailed instructions, both verbal and written, with a positive attitude.
  • Able to interact tactfully with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • A safety-first attitude is necessary to ensure that all safety precautions are considered and taken.
Position Details:
  • This is a summer position up to 44 hours per week. Summer hours of work are typically: Monday – Thursday 7a.m. - 5p.m. and Fridays 7 a.m. - 11a.m.
  • 2026 Hourly Pay Range – Grade 2: $18.19 - 22.74 Position Duration May 11, 2026 – August 28, 2026
